Historic Mystic Movable Bridge Rehabilitation

Connecticut DOT

Project Summary

Originally built in 1922, the bridge is one of two remaining functional Brown Design bascule bridges in the country and is located in the tourist district of downtown Mystic, CT. This local landmark carries over 11,500 vehicles per day. TranSystems, as the prime design consultant, was tasked to correct operational, structural and safety deficiencies that affected the reliable functioning of the movable span. TranSystems’ Team implemented an alternate counterweight shoring design eliminating the need to drive piles and, therefore, the risk of damaging surrounding historic structures. The bridge was sensitively restored and the project received the 2014 Engineering Excellence Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut.
