TranSystems’ Mystic Movable Bridge Rehabilitation project was one of three projects short-listed as ENR New York’s Overall Project Award Finalists. TranSystems’ Mystic Movable Bridge Rehabilitation project was also selected earlier this year as the Highways/Bridge category winner of ENR New York’s Best Projects competition this year. Nearly 60 projects were submitted this year for consideration in 18 categories.
Originally built in 1922, the bridge is one of two remaining functional Brown Design bascule bridges in the country and is located in the tourist district of downtown Mystic, CT. This local landmark carries over 11,500 vehicles per day. TranSystems, as the prime design consultant, was tasked to correct operational, structural and safety deficiencies that affected the reliable functioning of the movable span. TranSystems’ Team implemented an alternate counterweight shoring design eliminating the need to drive piles and, therefore, the risk of damaging surrounding historic structures. The bridge was sensitively restored.
“What a great honor to not only be recognized by ENR New York in the Highways/Bridge category, but as one of the top three projects in the region,” said TranSystems’ Project Manager Brian McGovern.
