The Bakers Haulover Cut Bridge located in Miami, Florida, required rehabilitation to address deterioration and section loss to the structural steel and bearings, and concrete cracks and spalls on the superstructure and piers, caused by 70+ years of exposure to the coastal Florida environment. The existing seawalls at both sides of the cut were in poor condition. The team rehabilitated the bridge while minimizing impacts to traffic on the only north-south throughfare on the coastal islands. Key under routes for traffic to adjacent properties that could not be closed to access as well. A complex finite element model was prepared for the bridge to inform the decision making for repairs that were required and confirm constructability of the designed repairs. Analysis showed that the deteriorated bracing members could be removed and did not require replacement, a savings of $1M in construction costs.
