BNSF over Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294)

The BNSF railroad bridge is an advance-enabling project for the Illinois Tollway’s $4 billion reconstruction of the Central Tri-State (I-294). The existing structure was a two-span steel beam structure that carried three tracks over I-294.  Except for minor rehabilitation, it had not undergone any major changes since its construction. Because it had not been modified since 1958, the existing bridge was a narrow “pinch-point” on I-294 that needed be removed prior to starting mainline reconstruction.

The TranSystems/HR Green Team was selected to perform on-site inspection, review layout of contract including design changes, provide geotechnical inspection and testing, prepare records, maintain documentation, submit pay estimates and change orders, provide coordination with the many stakeholders and any other duties requiring the services of an engineer to complete this project on a timely basis and in accordance with Tollway specifications.
