Domino Sugar Silos

Domino Sugar Silos

TranSystems (formerly WBCM) provided process, structural, civil and architectural design and construction services for the Finished Sugar Silos at ASR Group’s Domino Sugar Baltimore Refinery located in Baltimore, Maryland. The project includes four new 32-foot-diameter by 160-foot-tall sugar silos, housing 14 million pounds of finished sugar, quadrupling Domino’s previous capacity. An enclosed fire-rated 180-foot-tall stair tower was built to provide egress from the four silos. Circulation between the silos was provided by silo crossovers at the mezzanine and upper level. An enclosed elevated conveyor bridge provided circulation between the silos and the existing 12-story process building. The design considered the challenging waterfront site, the plant’s continuous operation and working in a Class-2 explosive environment. The additional capacity also streamlines their process, reduces energy and water usage. This new state of art facility was one of the largest capital investment projects in their history.
TranSystems (formerly WBCM) also provided a bathymetric survey of both the sugar unloading and fuel oil refueling berths, as well as adjacent shipping channels to the main shipping channel, and permitting, including USACE/MDE. This project includes electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and process infrastructure while working in and around a Class-2 explosive environment, which requires off-shift work and constant planning and communication with the facility personnel.
