With heavy truck traffic and limited right of way, the City of Joliet had unique criteria when entering the reconstruction of Houbolt Road between I-80 and U.S. Route 6, including the modification of the existing interchange of Houbolt Road at I-80 and Houbolt Road at U.S. 6 intersection. The 2.5-mile long, $130M project involved the construction of three new bridges, including a 2,000-foot major river bridge, two railroad crossings, three waterway crossings, open road tolling equipment, five signalized intersections, and the conversion of the existing Houbolt Road/I-80 diamond interchange to a DDI, which provides an increased level of service with its high turning volumes at the ramps.
TranSystems provided Phase I and Phase II design services, which included contract plan preparation, special provisions, estimates, and required permits. TranSystems served as Design Engineer for the DDI conversion project and as Independent Engineer for the road extension. As Independent Engineer, TranSystems prepared studies and cost estimates, produced plans and specifications for the design-build procurement documents, and provided construction oversight for the Houbolt Road extension.
