The Kenneth Burns Memorial Bridge is a 900-ft historic open spandrel concrete arch structure that carries Route 9 over Lake Quinsigamond connecting the City of Worcester and the Town of Shrewsbury. When the bridge inspection showed it to be in critical condition, replacement was deemed necessary, but stakeholders wanted to preserve the gateway feel of the bridge. TranSystems performed the original inspection and helped the department with the generation and comparison of several bridge type alternatives, traffic engineering, preliminary design of the selected bridge type, and public outreach. The bridge was replaced with a signature type deck arch bridge. TranSystems also served as MassDOT’s owner representative providing design review services for design-build construction.
