Pace’s Pulse program provides Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on various routes in and around Chicago. To expedite the service, level-boarding platforms were installed, as well as heated shelters, branding markers with real-time arrival info, decorative railings, bike racks, landscaping, and street furniture. An electric system melts snow on the concrete platforms in the winter.
TranSystems developed the plans for the first installation of this service along Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago and Niles, Illinois. To enable the above improvements, various ancillary infrastructure improvements were needed: sidewalk reconstruction, ADA ramps, brick pavers, lighting relocations, and drainage modifications. Structural modifications at the Dempster Street bridge permitted a previously non-accessible sidewalk to meet ADA requirements.
