When, under a continuing 40 year program to replace and renovate the 10 Chicago Loop elevated rapid transit stations, the Chicago Department of Transportation secured funding for State/Lake, they selected TranSystems to lead the design. Not only does the location bookend historic State Street, but also it has the highest ridership of any non-terminal elevated station with approximately 12,000 entering customers per day.
TranSystems is designing a complete replacement of the station and ADA upgrade of the nearby, Lake/Randolph (Lake station) Red Line subway entrance. CDOT’s selection of TranSystems hinged on our strong design experience for CDOT and CTA at rapid transit stations and the team’s world-class architects.
Improvements will over double platform space, provide multiple elevators for ADA access, and include an over-track bridge to transfer between the inner and outer Loop platforms. Additional stairs and escalators will be located based on preferred user travel paths, limiting pedestrian congestion on sidewalks at the intersection and allowing customers to reach their destination more quickly. A portion of the elevated structure will be replaced to eliminate the 2 columns currently located in the center of the intersection and increase truck clearance, improving both openness below and vehicular mobility.
