Career Q&A

  • I chose to pursue a career in Business Development because…

When I started my job search, I knew that I wanted to find a company and role that prioritized culture and collaboration, and after my first interview it was very apparent that this was something valued at TranSystems. I was drawn to the positivity and All-In approach that was shown and have been able to experience that firsthand during my time here!

  • The thing I love most about my job is…

That it allows me to be creative and work with a variety of different people. Because I work with people from each part of the Central Region, I am able to learn so much and gain insight from the different areas as I work with them. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t learn something new.

  • My favorite thing about TranSystems is…

The people. I have been very lucky to be able to work with a variety of different people across the company who are all so supportive and kind. The support and mentorship I have found at TranSystems has been instrumental in my career growth.

  • Since joining TranSystems…

I have become a lot more confident. Coming into this role, I was very timid to speak up and ask questions because this is my first job out of college. I also was not familiar with Engineering at all. During my time at TranSystems, I have become much more confident to speak up and contribute. The people I work with make it so easy to feel comfortable and provide me with the support needed to grow and continue to learn.

My Day

8 – 9 AM – Begin the Day

I normally start my day between 8-8:30 by catching up on my emails, updating my to-do list for the day, and checking in with who I am working with on different proposals.

9 AM – 12 PM – Work on Current Projects

Since I am in a support role, the projects I am working on are changing constantly. I am currently working on two proposals, one for the City of Naperville, IL, and the other for Great Rivers Greenway in St. Louis. This involved pulling resumes and project sheets, formatting the proposals, filling out any forms, and working with the Project Managers to coordinate writing the proposal and editing it so it is perfect to send out!

Every Tuesday I have a meeting with the Central Region Workload team to go over our workloads and priorities for the week. I also meet with Todd Herman weekly to discuss the GeoAM Technical Community since we lead it together!

12 – 1 PM – Lunch Break

I have lunch between 12-1. I will either just eat at my desk or get lunch with some friends from the office!

1 – 2 PM – Updating Vision

Every day for me is usually different, but there are a few things that are regularly on my to-do list. A big part of putting together proposals is resume updating and maintenance, so I am often updating resumes in Vision and adding new projects. I also oversee making sure that any proposals and projects I have worked on are updated in the Pipeline and that all the information is accurate.

2 – 3 PM – Check in with Mentors

Regularly I check in with Nicole Adesso and Cheri Schoenhals. They have both been mentoring me for proposals in the Great Lakes West and Midwest. They are both so helpful in answering any questions I have and guiding me on everything Business Development related! I do a majority of my proposals with or for them and have learned so much with their guidance!

3 – 5 PM – Continue Working on Daily Tasks

Every week I am usually working on a proposal or two, so this entails formatting, pulling and tailoring resumes and project sheets, and communicating with the engineers on the project approaches to include. It is a lot of editing and trial and error, but it is always rewarding when the final product comes together!

I also am the BD Lead for the Water Resources and GeoAM Technical communities, so I am in charge of sending out monthly meeting invites and keeping up to date with any leave behinds or promotional materials.
